I wrote this article in 2010 while I was still working with the Starting Strength organization. I recently received a request to post it again here. Four years later, the information is still every bit as relevant as it was then. (more…)

His story is incredibly inspirational, and so I asked him to share it with my readers. The following is the story of one man’s personal journey to build the body he desired and his remarkable triumph over unexpected adversity. (more…)

A Case for Anabolic Steroids

scarface1

Testosterone is what makes a man a man. It is the hormone responsible for all of the features, attributes, and characteristics that are classically associated with masculinity. Today more than ever, more and more men of a greater variety of age brackets are making the move towards hormone therapy, whether via a prescription, or the more traditional “dark side” route. Vets Day Recap and a Podcast on New Gym Owners, Handjobs, and Muscle Confusion

VETS_PARADE_BLV_01

After six days of mailing out replies and free books to Veterans, I am now all the way through the list. I suffered many delays along the way, inluding three separate lockouts from my email account as a result of the volume of mail coming in and going out. These each created a twenty four hour delay (which we were fortunate enough to create a somewhat effective workaround for).

I am proud to say that I was able to give away over $15,000 in free ebooks to Vets from around the globe since Sunday. This is one of the most rewarding things that I have ever done. (more…)

Are You Serious?

This post is intended to highlight the recent progress of one of my coaching clients, Brian. An always intense and committed trainee, Brian had originally hired me to coach him on the mental aspects of his preparation for the 2014 CrossFit games. As a masters competitor brand new to the sport, he knew that he would need every edge that he could get, and was willing to do whatever it would take to enter the event in top form.  (more…)

Turn the Volume Down

by Johnny Pain

Ok, so there’s something that I’ve been hearing a lot of recently that’s been bothering me. I’m the first to admit that there is more than one way to accomplish things when it comes to strength training, dieting, etc. However, there are some things that I feel people do simply due to an erroneous belief of the necessity of such actions in order to achieve a specific goal or adaptation. Building Muscle for the Skinny Fat Male

by Johnny Pain

The following is a question that was asked of me by a board member in my Q&A forum. The topic is one that I frequently address with consultation clients and that is covered in depth in my latest book project in development.

From “Wingman”

“I’m a skinny & weak guy working the LP to get bigger and stronger.

I already have quite a belly on me though, if i get bigger will that get bigger in proportion or will it sort itself out as I get stronger? Some coaches have said I should eat any calories at all costs while on LP but some have said i should be on a small surplus and keep it clean so that my body can grow whilst my belly shrinks.

Do you think this is a food question, or should I just add some conditioning (such as burpees) to the LP and let things sort themselves out?” (more…)

Flight of the Wind Sock

by DBT

It’s about 5 am. I’m just getting home from my post work, workout. My training partner and I decided to finish our workout by loading up the prowler with 12 45’s and doing several trips up and down the parking lot. The lot is about 50 yards long and we started by pushing it two parking spaces and switching, then one, then grinding out inches at a time until we just could not move it. As much as I wanted to throw that fucking thing into the scrap yard across the street, I couldn’t be happier. On my drive home I started thinking about the last 2 years of my training life. All of the peaks and valley’s achievements and setbacks. I’ve been lucky to have met some great people through training. People who I’d never have crossed paths with in 100 years had it not been for the simple act of lifting weights. (more…)

Summer: Get Out and Run!

by Jim Steel

Steel says get out and run.

Summer is a time to get in shape. It a time to take a step out of the front door and go for a run. And that’s the key: taking the step out the door and just starting. Believe me, you can do it. I’m not talking about running a marathon, but a 10 to 30 minute run a few times a week. (more…)
